DESCRIPTION
Bear Creek Dark Lager is a gluten-free all-grain recipe kit designed for brewers who want to craft rich, traditional-style dark beer without the complexity of true lager fermentation. This kit showcases the depth and versatility of rice-based malts, delivering layered notes of toast, light roast, and subtle chocolate character. The result is a smooth, medium-bodied dark lager with a clean finish and balanced bitterness. Unlike traditional lagers that require strict low-temperature fermentation and extended conditioning, this recipe uses a carefully selected ale yeast strain that produces lager-like character at standard ale temperatures. That means you can brew a crisp, clean “lager” without specialized temperature control equipment making it more accessible for homebrewers at any level. When fermenting under true lager conditions, a dedicated lager yeast may also be used for a more authentic lager character.

The more I drink this beer the more I grow to like it, could be because this type gets better as it ages? Not sure. I would like to try this one with the Naked Gas Hog next time as this one did produce quite a "smokey" flavour to it, perhaps due to the dark malted husks. I really like nice hoppy finish while not being too bitter.

This kit was developed in cooperation with James Eckert of Eckert Malting and Brewing Co in Chico. It is a close clone to his 'Doppel Dawg' which is a very Dark Rice Lager.
